The use of technology is growing at an astronomical rate among children these days. At the age of 3, when the child can barely say “Mom” or “Dad”, the child knows to operate ipads and phones to go to youtube and watch their favorite videos, Is this a boon or bane? It is definitely a mixed basket. Parenting by itself is a tough job and in this digital age it is a key challenge. Here a few tips on how to parent in the digital age
Monitor, not surveillance
It is not practical to deny a child access to the internet. Hence, parents need to keep a close eye on their child’s activities. There is a thin line between monitoring and surveillance. Just monitor their activities
Talk to them
With the increasing numbers of online bullying and various other incidents, it is important to have a conversation with your kids about it. Speak to them about these incidents and start the conversations early. Prevention is better than cure. Discuss with them about the type of games they play and videos they watch.
Know about what is trending
Parents usually are not up to date about the various trending technologies to keep up with their child’s activities. You do not have to be an IT expert to know about these technologies. Instead, read a few parenting blogs and get to know about the current technological trends. There are many resources which offers you assistance on this.
Establish clear rules about how and when kids can use the electronic devices. You can also use passcodes and child locks if necessary. Stay consistent with the rules and do not be flexible if the child is throwing a tantrum. If you are not serious about the rules, then neither will your child be.
Encourage them to speak up
In case your kid has to go through unfortunate circumstances where they have to face cyberbullying or anything worse, encourage them to talk to you about it and report it to you. Kids do need help and you create a comfortable vibe with them so that they can come and discuss to you without getting scared about how you would react.
