Starting a preschool is a big step in a child’s life and parents play a very important role in preparing them. In order to reduce their sad thoughts and crying, you must make sure that they are happy with this transition. Here, we have listed simple things that can help
you prepare your child for this change.
Casually talk to them
Start talking about the school in a casual and upbeat manner just two or three weeks before the classes start. For example, when you are in a park and the toddler is playing the slide, casually say ‘there’s one in your preschool also’. This will help them understand that the new place where they will be going soon is not very different. They have to be comfortable and happy about it.
Meanwhile, don’t over-prepare them. Don’t keep talking about the preschool and the changes all the time as this might overwhelm them. They might start thinking of the joining day as a big day, like an event, and you do not want them to over-expect. Make them feel normal and make them understand that it’ll be just as good as home.
Establish a set schedule
Following a schedule provides opportunities for making decisions and acting responsibly and thus a schedule will help the child in the transition of preschool schedule setting. Schedules help in learning about order, the concept of time, and sequencing. Established routines make the transition smooth and the children get used to following something. This will make it easier for them to jell-in with kids and teachers when they start the school.
Stick with morning and bedtime routines
If done consistently, these routines give the child an assurance and a sense of belonging. Further, it gives an opportunity to parents to connect with the kids, so it’s better to be available, attentive and responsive to your child’s needs.
An early morning routine can include, helping the child make his bed, brushing teeth and assembling things. Kids usually love a chart where their morning tasks are listed. Induce the excitement in them to complete those tasks and help them in everything, especially in the beginning. It will help them become organized.
A comforting bedtime routine includes, brushing teeth, reading a book, saying prayers, discussing the day’s events and finally tucking in. This task gives a closure to the kid and further strengthens the bond.
Set up daily chores
Teach your child to do the basic things such as take their plate to the kitchen basin after eating, close the water bottle cap after drinking, or drink properly in a glass, pick up the toys and feed the pet. Give them proper encouragement and boost whenever they complete any task.
Beware of the separation and anxiety
Sometimes you may feel your child is feeling anxious or keeps himself/herself away from the rest of the students, then don’t panic. It’s perfectly normal for the kid to feel such way in the beginning of the classes. You have to be attentive and patient. Be prepared for some tears and whining but make sure they feel positive about the whole thing. Try to connect with good things such as snacks, the toys etc. Always ensure that your child should not stick to any anxious feelings for a long time. When you drop them off, assure them that you will be back by the end of a couple of hours. Keep your goodbyes short and sweet.
Once your child adjusts to the surroundings and the change, the goodbyes will be much easier.
